From Debitoor to SumUp Invoicing: What Happened?
Debitoor came from Denmark and was popular with freelancers and small businesses because the software was simple. Write invoices, send, done. In 2019, SumUp, known for mobile card terminals, acquired the company. Until May 31, 2022, the Debitoor service ran, then it was over. Those who wanted to export their data had until the end of November 2022.
The successor is called SumUp Invoicing. The software is now part of the SumUp ecosystem with card terminals, business account and online shop. Those who used Debitoor before and are looking for the successor end up here.

What SumUp Invoicing Cannot Do
- No double-entry bookkeeping, no balance sheet

Prices: What Does SumUp Invoicing Cost?
Two plans, no hidden costs. All prices net, plus value-added tax.
| Feature | Free | Pro Invoicing |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | EUR 0 | EUR 8/month (annual) or EUR 10/month |
| Invoices per month | up to 4 | unlimited |
| Transaction fee (online payment) | 2.5% | 1.25% |
| Bank transfer | fee-free | fee-free |
| Recurring invoices | no | yes |
| E-invoice | yes | yes |
An example: You issue 100 invoices monthly with an average of EUR 500 and your customers pay online. In the free plan, EUR 1,250 in fees per year apply, in the Pro plan EUR 625. Those who only use bank transfers pay no transaction fees in any plan.
Accounting Plans from SumUp
SumUp also offers accounting plans besides the invoicing plan. Income statement (Einnahmen-Ueberschuss-Rechnung), VAT pre-registration and credits are only available from the "Accounting" plan. SumUp lists the exact prices on its own website in several tiers. Those who need more than pure invoicing should compare directly there.
E-Invoice Since 2025
Since 2025, you can create e-invoices in XRechnung and ZUGFeRD format with SumUp Invoicing. For B2B business in Germany, e-invoicing is becoming mandatory in phases, SumUp has implemented this. Both plans, including the free one, support this. What exactly the E-invoicing requirement and GoBD compliance means for your company is explained in a separate guide.
Tax Advisor and DATEV
According to the Help Center, SumUp has a DATEV export function. You export your booking data and pass it to the tax advisor. This works, but it is not comparable to a full DATEV online connection with booking data service. Those who need this are better off with Lexware Office or sevDesk.
The SumUp Ecosystem
SumUp Invoicing does not stand alone. The software is part of a larger ecosystem:
- Mobile card terminals (SumUp Air, SumUp Solo) for card payments on site
- SumUp business account with German IBAN
- Online shop and payment links
- POS system (SumUp POS)
Those who already have a SumUp card terminal benefit: sales are automatically combined, no manual entry. But: you are tied to one provider. And the invoicing software alone offers less than specialized accounting programs.
Advantages and Disadvantages
| Merkmal | Feature | Assessment |

SumUp Invoicing vs. Alternatives
The question that many former Debitoor users ask: Is SumUp Invoicing sufficient, or is switching to another solution worth it?
| Merkmal | Feature | SumUp Invoicing | Lexware Office | sevDesk | Papierkram |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 4 invoices/month | Free plan | |||
| Cheapest plan | EUR 0 / EUR 8 Pro | From EUR 6.90 | From EUR 8.90 | From EUR 8 | |
| E-invoice | |||||
| DATEV export | Yes | ||||
| EUeR | Only accounting plan | ||||
| Double-entry bookkeeping | |||||
| Banking integration | |||||
| GoBD-compliant | |||||
| Mobile app | |||||
| Card terminal integration |
When it comes to pure invoicing, SumUp can keep up. As soon as income statements, VAT pre-registration or analyses are involved, Lexware Office, sevDesk and Papierkram pull ahead. SumUp is especially worth it if you already use card terminals or the business account from SumUp.
User Reviews
Here it gets tricky: No review platform separates SumUp Invoicing from the rest of the SumUp ecosystem. Those who check on Appvizer, erfahrungen.com or in the App Store rate SumUp as a whole, i.e. card terminals, POS and business account all together.
- Appvizer: 4.2 out of 5 (over 13,000 reviews, SumUp total)
- erfahrungen.com: 3.5 out of 5 (over 18,000 reviews, SumUp total)
- Apple App Store: 4.4 out of 5 (SumUp app total)
- Google Play: 3.5 out of 5 (SumUp app total)
Therefore, we deliberately do not use a review schema for this page. The numbers give a rough direction, not more. Many of the negative reviews on erfahrungen.com and Google Play come from users with card terminal problems, not from users of the invoicing software.
Who is SumUp Invoicing Suitable For?
Für wen ist SumUp Invoicing geeignet?

- Those looking for a free entry solution for invoicing
- Mobile service providers who create invoices on the go

Who is Behind SumUp?
SumUp was founded in 2012. In Germany, business runs through SumUp Services GmbH in Berlin (HRB 142523 B, Charlottenburg District Court). The parent company, SumUp Limited, is based in London and Dublin. According to its own information, the company employs several thousand people and is active in over 35 countries. No longer a startup, but an established fintech provider.
Data Security and Compliance
SumUp Invoicing is GoBD-compliant, so suitable for legally compliant document archiving in Germany. E-invoices can be created in the legally prescribed formats.
A topic that often gets lost: As a self-employed person processing customer data, you bear a liability risk. A cyber insurance for SMEs protects against data breaches and IT security incidents. And those who want to insure themselves against errors in their own work find in the professional liability insurance the right solution.
Conclusion
SumUp Invoicing: Is It Enough?
For freelancers and small businesses that write a few invoices per month and do not want to deal with accounting: yes. The free plan is sufficient for occasional users, the Pro plan from EUR 8/month for everything above.
For everyone else: rather not. Those who need income statements, VAT pre-registration or real analyses get this at Lexware Office, sevDesk or Papierkram already in the cheapest plan.
Those who already use SumUp card terminals have a real reason to stay. For everyone else, the comparison is worth it.
Debitoor was acquired by SumUp in 2019 and shut down on May 31, 2022. Users who previously used Debitoor were migrated to SumUp Invoicing. The deadline for data export was November 30, 2022.
Nothing, as long as you get by with 4 invoices per month. Beyond that, Pro subscription costs EUR 8/month with annual commitment or EUR 10/month without. Bank transfers are fee-free in both plans, online payments incur 2.5% (Free) or 1.25% (Pro).
Yes, SumUp Invoicing meets the GoBD requirements for digital invoicing and document archiving in Germany.
Since 2025, SumUp supports XRechnung and ZUGFeRD formats. You can create and send e-invoices directly in the software.
Yes, according to the SumUp Help Center, there is a DATEV export function. This allows booking data to be passed to the tax advisor. However, a full DATEV online connection like Lexware Office or sevDesk is missing.
For online payments, 2.5% in the free plan and 1.25% in the Pro plan. Bank transfers cost nothing in any plan. Those who process many online payments should calculate the Pro plan.
For freelancers and small businesses that mainly write invoices and quotes. Those who need income statements, VAT pre-registration or double-entry bookkeeping are better off with sevDesk or Lexware Office.
No double-entry bookkeeping, no balance sheet preparation, no asset accounting. Income statement and VAT pre-registration are only in the more expensive accounting plan, not in the invoicing plan.
